It pays them to misdirect attention. It is just self defence. It also pays to pretend to be greater than they are. This entails subtle and not so subtle story-telling aka internet chatter. They splinter into factions and attitudes harden, as with any family or organization.
They are not necessarily dedicated to anything other than education of humanity, through enriching the experience of humanity, and of course to survival. Their main directors must be capable of seeing the very long term. They need to build and rebuild, but also to foresee destruction.
Catastrophe is no stranger to the earth, or the other planets.
